MUS 111-B

1. Due 3/1/06: Transcribe the three Mp3 files below. Each is a 2-part duet for flute and cello. (And they are all shorter than 20 sec.) You'll need to determine the key and meter for each one. Create three separate Finale files.

2. Due April 25, 2006. Transcribe this tune showing form, chords and melody. Use as efficient a layout as you can. Engrave it into Finale.

2. Due 2/6/06: Everly Take-downs: Choose one of the following tunes and transcribe the form, chords, and vocal parts. Don't worry - these tunes are very diatonic. These artists were the blueprint for many harmony-based acts that followed them, including The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel. It's worth your time to find out what makes them tick.

3. Due 3/15/06: Arranging: Rearrange the first section of the Scarlatti sonata below for 5 instruments of your choice from our "class ensemble." Choose from: tuba, trombone, Fr. horn, trumpet, bass, clarinet, voice, percussion. Try to keep to the concept and intent of the original setting. The original piano version sometimes has as many as 7-8 voices, or as few as 2, so allow your parts to come and go. Move the melody around between your parts to keep things interesting. You CANNOT alter the harmony or melody. Everything else is open to your interpretation. Do your work in concert key, but be sure you don't exceed the ranges of any instruments once the parts are transposed.

Below are the Hadyn sonata intro we worked on in class, the Scarlatti Finale file, and a passable MIDI performance of the Scarlatti for reference.

2. Due 3/2/06: Suite Judy Blue Eyes. Here are the four sections of this important Crosby Stills and Nash tune from 1969. Pick one and transcribe the 3 vocal parts.

For reference, here's an a capella version of the same tune: Suite A Capella
3. Due ?: Transcribe the Mp3 file below. It begins with the intro to the second verse and fades on the beginning of the organ solo. You need to show key signature, meter, measures, chords, melody/lyrics of the vocal. You also need to show specific small dimension parts for drumset, percussion ( timbales, guiro, cowbell), bass, guitar and organ. Do your work in Finale. Listen back and make sure your version matches the original. Print out a copy to bring to class and hand in.

Assignment #3 (Mp3)

4. Due ?: Transcribe the Mp3 file below. You need to get the bass, guitar, drums (particularly interesting!) and vocal parts. There's an intro, verse and chorus. This time there is 2-part harmony on much of the vocal line. Include it in the same staff - just flip the stems of the harmony line in the opposite direction from those of the lead vocal.

Assignment #3 Solution (.mus)

5. Due ?: Transcribe the three Mp3 files below. Each is a 2-part duet for flute and cello. You'll need to determine the key and meter for each one. If possible, create a single Finale file with three sections, each with a new time signature, key signature and tempo marking.

6. Due ?: Transcribe the Mp3 clip below into a leadsheet format (just melody and chords). There are a number of separate instruments and lines in there, so you'll need to boil all the harmony down to the basic changes. The clip has two sections - verse and chorus. The chorus has time changes in it, so watch out! It should be 16 bars, total. Be sure to include feel and tempo markings.

Assignment #6 (Mp3)

7. Due ?: Transcribe the Mp3 file below in leadsheet format. This is a rock ballad in 3 parts (verse, pre-chorus, chorus). This is a rather cheesy playback of a notation file, so you'll have to listen closely for the chords (arpeggios in the guitar part) - don't be distracted by the thin sound. Include dynamic and articulation  markings.

Assignment #7 (Mp3)

8. Due ?: Transcribe the Mp3 file below. Use a basic leadsheet format (Repeat: CHORDS AND MELODY ONLY), but include any rhythmic notation necessary to indicate the song's groove (i.e. chart the rhythm of the intro). Make this as clean as possible - suitable to hand out to a band and expect success.
